The Sandymount Hotel, a beloved landmark in leafy Dublin 4, is celebrating 70 years of continuous family ownership and hospitality this May – longer than any other hotel property in Dublin . Originally opened in 1955 as a modest bed and breakfast, the hotel has since grown into one of the capital’s most respected four star properties.
In an era when many city hotels are under overseas corporate ownership, the Loughran family remains committed to offering a uniquely Irish and independent experience. The Sandymount Hotel is now recognised as one of Dublin’s best-regarded family-run stays—still proudly owned and operated by the third generation of the Loughran family.
To mark the milestone, the hotel hosted a celebratory event for the local community, long-standing staff, and friends of the hotel. In addition, visitors can avail of a 20% discount on bed and breakfast bookings made in May for all stays until the end of December. Those taking advantage of the offer can avail of one of the hotel’s recently refurbished rooms, part of an ongoing programme of upgrades that honour the hotel’s heritage while embracing modern comfort.
The bar team has also crafted a number of 70th Anniversary Cocktails inspired by the hotel’s history, which include Irish Maid, The Aristocrats Sand’E’mount Tea, Mount Herbert’s Comfort and The Temperance Turn.
Located on Herbert Road in the heart of Sandymount, the hotel has been witness to—and a participant in—decades of change in Dublin. From the arrival of the DART and the construction of the East Link Bridge, to the rise of the nearby IFSC, the ever-iconic Poolbeg Chimneys and the erection of the Molly Malone statue, The Sandymount Hotel has remained a steadfast presence in a rapidly evolving city.
It all began in 1955, when George and Rosaleen Loughran purchased No. 7 Herbert Road and opened a small bed and breakfast to support their growing family. As demand grew, so did the hotel, gradually expanding into neighbouring properties and evolving into the much-loved 187-bedroom hotel it is today. Rebranded from Mount Herbert Hotel to The Sandymount Hotel in 2011 to reflect its unique sense of place, the hotel is now led by the third generation of the Loughran family, who have recently overseen an elegant refurbishment of rooms and guest areas. As part of its forward-thinking approach, the owners also embraced sustainability, with recent upgrades including the installation of electric vehicle charging points—meeting the needs of modern travellers while staying true to its community-focused ethos.
Co-owner Gerard Loughran said: “This anniversary is deeply personal for me, my family and our loyal staff. It’s not just about a building or a number — it’s about the thousands of moments, memories and connections that have shaped The Sandymount Hotel and our family over seven decades. We’re incredibly proud to continue the legacy my grandparents began back in 1955, and to do so alongside a team whose loyalty, kindness and care have been the heart of this place from the beginning. Our wonderful guests, past and present, are at the heart of it all. As is the community that we are lucky to be part of here in Sandymount. This celebration is for everyone who has played a part in our story, past, present and future!”
Set within one of Dublin’s most prestigious coastal neighbourhoods, with a beach and the Aviva stadium on its doorstep, the hotel has a real sense of warmth and community — a true original, still going strong after 70 years.
