SETU launches degree allowing hospitality employees to study while working

South East Technological University (SETU) has launched a new degree designed to help hospitality and tourism employees develop their management skills while remaining in employment.

The Bachelor of Business in Hospitality and Tourism Management was formally launched by Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke at SETU in Waterford on 2 November.

The Level 7 programme combines academic study with workplace learning, providing a pathway to a university qualification for people already working in the sector.

Delivered over three and a half years, the course uses a blend of online and on-campus teaching, alongside structured work placements and professional development. Its first cohort of 24 students began their studies in September.

Developed in consultation with employers and industry partners, the programme aims to strengthen leadership, operational and commercial management skills, supporting progression into supervisory and middle-management roles.

County Wexford Chamber Skillnet is providing funding towards programme costs for eligible participants. Other organisations involved in supporting its development include Fáilte Ireland, the Irish Hotels Federation, the South-East Regional Skills Forum and Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board.

Minister Burke said the degree responds directly to the skills and workforce needs of hospitality and tourism businesses, helping employees progress while supporting employers in developing and retaining talent.

The programme also aligns with Ireland’s national tourism policy, A New Era for Irish Tourism, which places an emphasis on workforce development, career progression and high-quality employment.

By linking study with practical workplace experience, SETU aims to enable participants to apply their learning within their businesses while continuing to earn a salary.
